Dylan "Rattones" Southworth Interview & Pics...
For those of you out there who don't know who Dylan Southworth is, well he's a Santa Cruz Surfboards team rider from Mexico that's been killing it in Central & South America over the last few years. We recently got in touch with Dylan to get a little info for our fans. Here you go. Pic's courtesy of Bella Hunt...
Okay, so what's your full name & nickname?
Paul Dylan Southworth (better know as Rattones or Avatar)
How old are you?
born the 11th of July 1990 so 19 now.
Where are you from?
Well, my parents are from Oregon and that's where my brother "Travis" and I were born, but we moved to a little town in Nayarit, Mexico called Sayulita when i was 5.
Who are your sponsors?
Santa Cruz Surfboards, Pawa Clothing, Monster Energy,
OAM, Dragon, Captain Pablos Restaurant & Fishing Adventures Sayulita Mexico.
How's the surf been down there?
I live in front of the surf break here in Sayulita, and there's a rivermouth that creates a right and left pointbreak with beachbreaks on either side, and we have Punta de Mita, which has some of the best waves around the area. There are about 10 waves that are secrets that no one has ever surfed. They're sick!
What Santa Cruz boards have you been riding?
My favorite all around board is the 5'4 Ozzie Wright, but I've also been riding the 5'11 Fletcher and the 5'11 Archy, which work killer as well. I also just rode my 6'6 Adam Replogle pintail, which is now a collectors item.
What do you think about epoxy surfboards?
Depends on which epoxy boards you're talking about. I've tried the Firewire boards but didn't really connect with them, and i've had a couple custom epoxies from a few different shapers, but they didn't respond, or hold up like the Santa Cruz Epoxies...
Barrels or airs?
Both! Pascuales for barrels and Sayulita for airs!
Favorite trip?
I went to Bali last summer 09' and scored the biggest swell in 2 years, which was in August, right before the earthquake. Was insane!
Any big plans for 2010?
I want to hold my title in the Copa Las Americas Tour here in Mexico, and also compete in the Pro Junior's and WQS series. Also, there's going to be a Mexican movie coming out this summer, so that's on the agenda.
Who do you want to win the world championship this year?
I think the young guns on tour this year are going to rip, but as much as i'd like Kelly to win it's probably going to be an Aussie.
Shout outs?
Orale Cavarones, Tear that shit up! Pinche Buey!
